Crowne Plaza Athens

The reverse pyramid – origami concept

The main Ballroom / Congress centre  is located in level -2 and expands in approximately  1.117 sq.m. Lacking natural lighting, it required a complete makeover to feel attractive and efficient. To optimize daily operation, the client request was to design six different halls which could be united in pairs or all together covering a vast range of operation scenarios. Congress, seminar, lecture halls, corporate meeting rooms could be a reference. Full versatility and flexibility were the prime goals. A serious restriction was that the design should be made to be implemented in a very short timeframe and while the hotel remained in full operation mode. We developed the idea of a reverse pyramid, resembling an Origami pattern with polygonal shapes like triangular fragments forming a uniform ceiling. The idea was the main focal point in the central foyer. The foyer is designed to host coffee break area with free standing table and several charging stations and a giant LED screen, whereas a cloakroom is located by the entrance. Six separate autonomous halls with moving soundproof walls area arrayed around the foyer.  A main concept for the whole project was the lighting design which followed the full versatility design principle as well. In general we used the tunable white philosophy to produce different lighting style are requirements. All cove lighting grooves were developed using an RGB dimmer philosophy meeting certain design scenarios. Signage was designed to meet our general design philosophy and all colours used met the standards proposed by IHG (Intercontinental Hotel Group).

The design duration was just 4 months and the construction lasted just 1,5 months while the rest of the hotel aws in full daily operation. In order to respond to any construction based issues our team supervised the project constantly and provided all required solutions instantly.

The project was designed and completed in 2018 – it was published in several digital and printed media.
